Pattern Regularity as a Visual Key

چکیده

Regular structures, flat and non-flat, are perceived as regular in a wide range of viewing angles and under varying illumination. In this papers, we exploit this simple observation and develop an invariant measure of pattern regularity. The measure is the maximum of the regularity values obtained for different directions within the pattern. We demonstrate that the regularity feature introduced is reasonably stable under weak perspective of real nonflat structures. The feature is consistent with human perception of texture regularity. It is used for regularity-based image filtering. Examples of invariant detection of periodic structures are shown. Finally, structural defects in regular textures are detected as locations of low regularity.

The Regularity Lemma and Graph Theory

The Szemerédi Regularity Lemma states that any sufficiently large graph G can be partitioned into a bounded (independent of the size of the graph) number of regular, or “random-looking,” components. The resulting partition can be viewed as a regularity graph R. The Key Lemma shows that under certain conditions, the existence of a subgraph H in R implies its existence in G. We prove the Regulari...

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...

Encoding of configural regularity in the human visual system.

The visual system is very efficient in encoding stimulus properties by utilizing available regularities in the inputs. To explore the underlying encoding strategies during visual information processing, we presented participants with two-line configurations that varied in the amount of configural regularity (or degrees of freedom in the relative positioning of the two lines) in a fMRI experimen...

Transparallel processing by hyperstrings.

Human vision research aims at understanding the brain processes that enable us to see the world as a structured whole consisting of separate objects. To explain how humans organize a visual pattern, structural information theory starts from the idea that our visual system prefers the organization with the simplest descriptive code, that is, the code that captures a maximum of visual regularity....

Testing Whether and When Abstract Symmetric Patterns Produce Affective Responses

Symmetry has a central role in visual art, it is often linked to beauty, and observers can detect it efficiently in the lab. We studied what kind of fast and automatic responses are generated by visual presentation of symmetrical patterns. Specifically, we tested whether a brief presentation of novel symmetrical patterns engenders positive affect using a priming paradigm. The abstract patterns ...
